The condition of timber industry of Russia in 2017

In recent years the tendency of growth of volumes of forest harvesting in the Russian Federation. By the end of 2016, the biggest increase 105,9% - showed the harvesting of logs of deciduous trees 27.1 million m3. Also, increased harvesting of logs of coniferous species (pine and spruce) - by 3.5%, amounting to 79 million m3. However, in 2016, a 4.1% decrease in the volume of fuel wood harvesting (total of 14.2 million m3) and 1.5% of unprocessed wood (including poles and stakes) (8.7 million m3), and in 2015, these volumes overall fell by 11.4%.

At the end of 8 months 2017 in comparison with the similar period of 2016 were again recorded growth in the volume of timber of deciduous species (except for tropical species) of 2.4%. During the period from January to August of 2017, the harvesting of softwood log intended for further processing, fell by 3% compared to the same period in 2016. Rates of harvesting of wood for fuel fell over the period by 5.4%.

Development of the timber industry is constrained by a number of problems. One of them are forest fires. According to the Deputy Minister of natural resources and ecology - head of Federal forestry Agency V. I., a Valentine, the damage from forest fires in 2015 amounted to 60 billion rubles, in 2016 - 26 billion. In 2017 is projected damages in the amount of 9.5 billion rubles.

A serious problem for forestry in the country remain illegal logging with the subsequent implementation of illegally sourced timber. According to the world wildlife Fund Russia and the world Bank, up to 20% harvested in the Russian Federation wood is illegal. Illegal logging of valuable tree species carried out under the guise of sanitary. And the illegal commercial timber harvesting is often done under the guise of collecting fallen trees.
