In recent years the tendency of growth of volumes of forest harvesting in the Russian Federation. During the period from January to August of 2017, the harvesting of softwood log intended for further processing, fell by 3% compared to the same period in 2016. Rates of harvesting of wood for fuel fell over the period by 5.4%.

Development of the timber industry is constrained by a number of problems. One of them are forest fires. I., a Valentine, the damage from forest fires in 2015 amounted to 60 billion rubles, in 2016 - 26 billion. In 2017 is projected damages in the amount of 9.5 billion rubles.
