Description:
Photophilous deciduous tree with dark green foliage, reaching 20-30m in height. Stems of Mongolian oak glabrous, reddish-brown. Leaves short-petiolate, oblong, to 20 cm long, glabrous, slightly pubescent below. The leaves are thick, coriaceous, on short petioles, obovate or oblong, to 20 cm long, with blunt, short lobes; dark green above, bottom paler; collected in tufts at the ends of branches. In autumn the leaves turn a bright yellow-brown tone. Portion of dried leaves remain on the tree until spring. The flowers are dioecious: staminate clustered in drooping catkins, the pistillate sessile, in the axils of the leaves. Pollination occurs by the wind. Oak blooms simultaneously with opening of leaves. Fruiting occurs late, no earlier than at the age of 20-25 years. The fruit is an acorn.

Acorns should be sown in the autumn before the snow falls and freezing of the soil, or to provide special storage conditions. Autumn sowing is the most simple, but there is a serious risk of damage to parts of acorns by rodents.
