British Columbia is opening a trade representative office in London.
British Columbia opens a sales office in London to export lumber to Europe and the Middle East
The province of British Columbia (Canada), the second largest exporter of softwood lumber in the world, announced the opening of a sales office in London to expand supplies to the markets of the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The initiative is being implemented by the state Forestry Innovation Investment (FII) corporation as part of a strategy to diversify exports and reduce dependence on the US market. Strategic context Key prerequisites for opening a London office:
Market opportunities Favorable conditions for Canadian exporters: • A program to build 1.5 million new homes in the UK over 5 years • Ban on the import of Russian timber products • Cessation of excess supplies of spruce wood from Central and Northern Europe • Canada-UK Free Trade Agreement (99% tariff cancellation) Expert assessments “The expansion into the UK reflects our commitment to creating sustainable, diversified markets for British Columbia's forest products,” said FII Chairman of the Board Rick Doman. Importance for the global market The opening of a representative office in London will increase competition in the European lumber market: • Strengthening Canada's position in the European market • Diversification of export flows • Taking advantage of the free trade agreement • Substitution of Russian and European suppliers The London office will complement FII's existing offices in China, India and Vietnam, creating a global network for the promotion of British Columbia timber products.
