Metsä Group withdraws from the regional PEFC system

Metsä Group is withdrawing from the regional PEFC system, creating its own: the trend towards stricter control in wood supply chains

Finnish timber giant Metsä Group has announced its withdrawal from the regional PEFC certification system and the creation of its own certification group in 2026. The new scheme will be available to members of the Metsäliitto cooperative and the company's contract customers, who will be able to directly connect their forest plots to the corporate certification structure.

Reasons for the decision
The company explains this step with the desire to strengthen control over compliance with standards and ensure full compliance with certification obligations.

"In our opinion, there are operators in the current regional system who are not sufficiently committed to meeting the certification criteria and correcting deficiencies. We want to keep these issues under our control," said Juha Yumppanen, the company's forest director.

Market reaction and risks to competition
The decision raised concerns of the Central Union of Rural Producers and Forest Owners of Finland (MTK). The organization emphasizes that forest owners should maintain the freedom to choose the buyer of their timber.

"It is good that the Metsä Group takes certification seriously. However, I would like to remind forest owners that it is important to ensure competition between buyers with every sale of timber," said Marco Macki—Hakola, MTK Forestry Director.

Financial implications
Certification directly affects the income of forest owners. The company confirms that certified wood receives a price premium, and FSC-certified wood costs more than PEFC-certified wood.

The context for the Russian LPC
This decision demonstrates the global trend towards stricter controls in wood supply chains and increasing demands for transparency of the origin of raw materials. For Russian exporters, this means:

• Increasing the importance of certificates of sustainable forest management for access to international markets
• Increasing demands from large industrial customers for transparency in supply chains
• Potential increased competition for certified raw materials
