The Swedish startup Cirkulär received a grant of €226 thousand for the creation of biorefining from waste from the forest industry

The Swedish biotech company Cirkulär, in partnership with the University of Boros and Kitcoat, has received a grant of 226,000 euros from the FORMAS Research Foundation. The financing is aimed at scaling the technology of recycling waste from the timber industry into a line of high-value-added products, the key of which is an innovative protein ingredient for aquaculture.

Technological basis
The project is based on the mushroom fermentation of LPC waste. The company has already introduced its first product, a protein component for aquaculture (Mycomeal), becoming the first in the world to commercialize mycoprotein for this sector.

Product line expansion
The grant will allow for the diversification of production within a single fermentation process. In addition to the main protein ingredient, it is planned to release:

ProductAppointment
Protein isolatesAn alternative to soy and fishmeal
Chitin-glucan complexesDietary fiber and cosmetic ingredients
ChitosanRaw materials for biodegradable packaging and medical materials
Beta-glucansImmunomodulatory components for feed and functional nutrition

Strategic goal
"We are expanding our focus beyond the protein ingredient, assessing the potential of other compounds for sustainable development," said Eric Este, founder and CEO of Cirkulär. The ultimate goal is to create an integrated biotechnological complex capable of producing several products simultaneously.

The context for the industry
The project demonstrates a global trend towards closed cycles and maximum processing of by-products. The development of such technologies points to potentially new, high-margin uses for wood processing waste that go far beyond traditional bioenergy.

Key aspects of the project
• Grant amount: 226,000 euros
• Technology: mushroom fermentation of LPC waste
• Main product: protein ingredient for aquaculture (Mycomeal)
• Partners: Buros University, Kitcoat Company

Importance for the forestry industry
• Creating new value chains from waste
• Transition to a closed-loop economy
• Development of high-margin biotechnologies
• Reducing the environmental burden of LPC
