British Columbia and China have agreed to cooperate in wooden construction

British Columbia and China have agreed to cooperate in wooden construction to reduce dependence on the US market

The Province of British Columbia (Canada) and the Government of China have signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of modern wooden construction. The agreement is designed for five years and is supported by the Federal Ministry of Natural Resources of Canada.

The key objectives of the agreement are:

  • Integration of modern wooden technologies into urban and rural development strategies in China.

  • Joint research and exchange of experience in the construction of high-rise buildings made of cross-glued wood (CLT).

  • Strengthening the entire supply chain for wooden construction.

Expert context:

"This is a relatively simple opportunity to restore trade relations with Beijing," said Juliet Lu, a political scientist. China, traditionally focused on concrete and steel, is gradually opening up to wooden construction thanks to new technologies such as engineered wood, which allows for the construction of larger-scale facilities.

Economic reasons:

The agreement was a response to pressure from the United States, which imposed significant duties on Canadian timber.

"We are exploring other markets to create new ones and strengthen existing partnerships to stabilize and diversify the sector," Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forestry of British Columbia.

Strategic importance for the industry:

The agreement opens the way for the supply of highly processed products (glued structures, CLT) to China, which will allow Canada to move away from exporting raw materials in favor of high-value-added goods. China is the third largest export market for Canadian timber products.

🚀 Conclusions for the Russian LPC:

Canada's active reorientation to the Chinese market in the segment of modern wooden technologies:

  1. Increases competition in a promising area.

  2. It confirms the global trend and the high market potential of wooden construction.

For Russian exporters, this is a signal to accelerate the development of competencies and product lines in the field of engineered wood and ready-made construction solutions in order to occupy their niche in the growing Chinese market.
