India is a breakthrough market for American hardwood and softwood

India is a breakthrough market for American hardwood and softwood

American producers of hardwood and softwood shipped more than 28,100 cubic meters of wood to Mumbai, Chennai and Tuticorin in the first quarter of 2026, which is 24% more than in the first quarter of 2025. Red oak, white oak and hickory have become drivers of record growth, and the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) promotion program reached USD 12.28 million in 2025. India is turning from a secondary destination into a key market for American timber exports, especially in the segment of high-margin hardwood.

First quarter figures: solid growth

According to the US Department of Agriculture, shipments of American timber to India in the first quarter of 2026 amounted to:

PeriodSupply volume (m3)Dynamics
I quarter of 2026>28 100+24% by the first quarter of 2025
I quarter of 202522 600

March 2026 was a particularly strong month: more than 13,800 cubic meters of American timber passed through Indian ports, which is 41% more than in March 2025.

Destination ports: Mumbai (west), Chennai (southeast), Tuticorin (south).

Soft wood dominates so far, but hard wood grows faster.

The vast majority of American exports to India are still conifers.:

  •     - Southern Yellow Pine
  •     - Western Yellow Pine (Ponderosa Pine)
  •     - Douglas Fir

However, more valuable hardwoods are becoming the fastest growing segment. Indian furniture, joinery and door manufacturers in Mumbai, Chennai and Tuticorin are actively purchasing:

BreedApplication
Red OakFurniture, floor coverings
White oakFurniture, whiskey barrels, doors
HickoryTools, furniture, floors
The Ash TreeFurniture, bent products
Solid mapleFurniture, cutting boards
Black walnutPremium furniture, interiors

Record year 2025 for American hardwood

According to AHEC, shipments of American hardwood to India are expected in 2025.:

IndicatorMeaningDynamics
Volume15,996 m3+37%
Cost$9.98 milliona record

Red and white oak together account for more than half of the total cost of hardwood supplies.

Trade missions and contracts: how to conquer the market

The export growth is not an accident, but the result of systematic efforts to promote American timber in India.

IndiaWood 2026 (Bangalore, February 26 – March 2):

  •     - The American pavilion presented 8 hardwood exporters from the USA.
  •     - The American Hardwood Assured (AHA) platform, a satellite deforestation compliance tracking system that verifies shipments at the county level, was demonstrated.

West Virginia Trade Mission (March 2026):

  •     - Organized by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and the United States Southern Trade Association (SUSTA).
  •     - International buyers from India and Vietnam inspected hardwood stocks at sawmills.
  •
  • Result: Cherry River Lumber, Meadow River Hardwood Lumber, and Laurel Creek Hardwood have signed contracts to supply red oak, white oak, black cherry, and walnut to Mumbai and Hanoi.

Why is India becoming a breakthrough market?

  1. - The growing middle class and the demand for high-quality furniture. The Indian furniture market is estimated at billions of dollars and is growing rapidly. Consumers are increasingly choosing products made from solid natural wood rather than substitutes.
  2. - Development of construction and decoration. India is building new offices, shopping malls, airports and housing. American oak, maple and walnut are in demand for decoration.
  3. - Competitiveness of American timber. American breeds (especially oak) are valued for their hardness, texture, and durability. In terms of quality and price, they are competitive compared to tropical timber from Africa and Southeast Asia.
  4. - Phytosanitary requirements: The Indian Plant Quarantine Ordinance of 2003 requires all imported wood to be kiln-dried or heat-treated. American manufacturers comply with these standards.
  5. - American Hardwood Assured (AHA) platform: Transparency of origin and compliance with environmental regulations are becoming a competitive advantage. The AHA tracks shipments to the county level, which eliminates the risks of illegal logging and simplifies customs clearance.
  6.

Key indicators of American timber exports to India:

IndicatorMeaning
Exports in the first quarter of 2026>28,100 m3 (+24%)
Export in March 2026>13,800 m3 (+41%)
Supply of hardwood (2025)15,996 m3 (+37%)
Cost of hardwood supplies (2025)$9.98 million

Importance for the global forest market

1. Diversification of sales markets for the USA
India is becoming an alternative to the traditional American timber markets (China, Canada, Vietnam, Europe). Given the trade wars with China and the slowdown in European demand, the Indian direction is a strategic diversification.

2. Competition for the Indian buyer
India imports timber from New Zealand, Russia, Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia. The Americans' success is still modest in absolute terms (28,100 m3 per quarter is not much for India), but the growing share of hardwood and high growth rates (+24-41%) are an alarming signal for competitors.

    3. An example for other exporters
Americans use an integrated approach: participation in exhibitions, organization of trade missions, satellite verification of origin, work with associations (AHEC). Other countries (Russia, Europe, New Zealand) should adopt this experience if they want to increase exports to India.

4. The future belongs to hardwood
So far, the volume of coniferous wood is higher, but the growth of solid wood (+37% in 2025) shows where the true potential lies. The Indian market is willing to pay more for quality and design, not just for cheapness.

Forecast

If the current pace continues, 2026 will be a new record year for American exports to India. AHEC will continue to promote the AHA platform and organize trade missions. Indian furniture and joinery manufacturers will increase purchases of red and white oak, hickory, maple and walnut.

For Russian exporters of sawn timber (pine, spruce, larch, birch), the Indian direction is not yet a priority, but the potential is huge. However, if Russian companies do not step up, Americans will occupy the niche of premium hardwood, and New Zealanders and Europeans will occupy the niche of soft wood, leaving Russia with only a price war for mass grades.

India is a breakthrough market, and those who invest in its development today will reap the benefits for decades to come.
