Leading Finnish timber companies improved their financial results in the second quarter

Leading Finnish timber companies improved their financial results in the second quarter, but warned of lower demand

    Two leading Finnish timber industry groups, UPM and Stora Enso, reported higher underlying financial results for the second quarter of 2026, although overall sales remained unchanged amid continued weakness in the timber markets. The companies attributed the improvement to internal operational measures, but warned of significant geopolitical and trade uncertainty, as a result of which demand remains low in many end markets.

UPM Financial Results

  • - Comparable operating profit: 212 million euros (+71% compared to the same period in 2025).
  • - Sales volume: 2.36 billion euros (against 2.34 billion a year earlier, a slight increase).

    The company attributed the improvement in performance to:

  •     - increased production volumes;
  •     - margin management;
  •     - continuous improvement of efficiency.

Financial results of Stora Enso

  • - Adjusted operating profit: 160 million euros (+27% compared to the same period in 2025).
  • - Sales volume: 2.42 billion euros (unchanged from last year).

    Profit growth is assured:

  •     - launch of a new consumer cardboard production line in Oulu (northern Finland);
  •     - increased production volumes;
  •     - reduction of variable costs.

Stora Enso2,42160+27%

Cautious forecasts

    Both companies warned of continued significant geopolitical and trade uncertainty. Demand in many end markets remains low, which limits opportunities for sustainable growth.

    Analysts are also cautiously optimistic.:

Ville Arffman (Finnish investment company Sijoittaja):
    "The improvement mainly reflects measures taken by individual companies, rather than improved market conditions"

Juuso Kenkkila (Head of Equity and Investment at Finnish OP Financial Group):
    "It is too early to conclude that the sector has passed the bottom of the recession, as there is insufficient evidence of a recovery in demand."

Importance for the global market

    The financial results of UPM and Stora Enso demonstrate that even in conditions of weak market demand, large players can improve their performance through internal efficiency, cost optimization and investments in new products (for example, consumer cardboard). However, this does not indicate a recovery in the industry as a whole.

Key findings for the global market:

  •     - Demand for traditional timber products (paper, pulp) remains weak.
  •     - Companies survive due to operational efficiency, not market growth.
  •     - Investments in new segments (cardboard, packaging) are becoming a strategic priority.
  •     - There are no signs of a broad market recovery yet.

The prospects

    In the coming quarters, the Finnish timber industry giants will continue to focus on reducing costs and increasing efficiency. However, without an improvement in the macroeconomic situation and a recovery in demand in key markets (Europe, Asia), sustainable growth remains questionable.
