How do I process lumber so that it doesn't rot for at least 10 years

I want to share my experience of how I process lumber so that it doesn't rot for at least 10 years. The topic is painful for me.: how many times have I seen how after a couple of seasons the boards on the terrace or logs in the basement become covered with mold and begin to crumble. Over the years of trial and error, I have developed a system for myself, which I want to share. I must say right away: there is no magic pill, but there are proven methods that really work.

 

Why does wood rot and what to do about it?

 

The tree is destroyed by fungi and bacteria, which need moisture, oxygen and a suitable temperature to live. To remove one of these factors is to stop rotting. There are different ways: someone dries, someone impregnates, someone isolates from moisture. I've tried a lot, and I'll say this: the key to longevity is an integrated approach.

 

Stage 1: Preparation is an 80% success rate

 

Before pouring antiseptic, the wood must be prepared. I always start with drying: the moisture content of the board should not exceed 20%, otherwise the impregnation will not be absorbed, but will lock inside, creating ideal conditions for rot. If the lumber is wet, I let it lie under the canopy for a week or two.

 

Next is cleaning. Dust, dirt, tar, old paint — all this prevents the composition from penetrating into the fibers. I brush the metal, and if there is an old coating, I remove it with a grinder. Special attention is paid to the ends: they absorb moisture the fastest, so I process them first and in several layers.

 

Stage 2: Folk Remedies — Cheap and Angry

 

I used to be skeptical about "grandfatherly" methods, but a couple of cases made me reconsider my views. I'll tell you about two that really surprised you.

 

Used engine oil. Yes, yes, the very thing that you drain when replacing. A carpenter I know advised me to soak the logs for the floor in the gazebo — it's been five years, the boards are as good as new, although it's always damp in the basement. The oil creates a water-repellent film and prevents the fungus from developing. The negative is the smell and environmental friendliness, but for non—residential buildings (barn, flooring, poles) this is a great budget option.

 

Pharmacy cocktail. I came across a recipe on the Internet: for 10 liters of water — two vials of green tea, two iodine and two fucorcines. It sounds weird, but it works! Iodine does not stain wood, and greenery with fucorcine shows where you have already walked, which is convenient for large areas. I treated the rafters in the garage like this: not a single black spot in three years. For visible elements where aesthetics are important, this composition is ideal.

 

Stage 3: Professional Antiseptics — when a warranty is needed

 

Folk methods are good for outbuildings, but if we are talking about an apartment building or a terrace where you want to forget about the problem for a decade, I use proven formulations. The main thing here is not to skimp on cheap products without biocides: they only give a decorative effect, and after a year the wood turns black.

 

For myself, I have identified two types:

 

Non-removable antiseptics. These are formulations based on copper or a new generation of biocides that do not wash off with water and work even when in contact with soil. For example, Prosept Eco Ultra provides protection for up to 50 years, and TECHNONICOL for up to 50 years with proper treatment. They should be applied in 2-3 layers with intermediate drying for 2-4 hours.

Water-based antiseptics with UV protection. If the lumber is going to be in the sun (facade, fence), I take formulations like VALTTI Expert Akva: they protect against moisture, fungus and burnout, and the claimed durability is up to 10 years. The colored versions also give the wood a noble shade.

 

Stage 4: Application technology — without haste

 

Many people make the mistake of applying antiseptic in one layer "for show." I do this:

 

  1. The temperature is not lower than +5°C. When cold, the composition is not absorbed.
  2. The tool is a brush or roller for small areas, a spray gun for large ones. I use maklovitsa more often: it distributes the composition well over the texture.
  3. There are at least two layers, and three for the ends and problem areas. I wait for it to dry completely between layers (usually 4-6 hours, but I follow the instructions).
  4. Consumption — I do not regret: it takes 250-300 g/m2 for a sawn board, about 150 g/m2 for a planed one. Savings here result in repeated processing in a year.

  8. Antiseptic is the base, but not the final coating. To make the protection work for 10 years or longer, I apply oil or varnish on top. Important: first the antiseptic, then everything else — otherwise the varnish film will not allow the impregnation to penetrate the wood. For the street, I take oils with fungicides (Osmo, Biofa), for interior work — acrylic varnishes.

And one more thing: once every 2-3 years I check the condition of the coating. If there are chips or scuffs, I touch up. This prolongs the life of the structure for years.
