Balsa/Balsa is highly appreciated for ease and practicality. In dried form the bulk of its wood for 1 cubic m is about 100 kg, which is almost 8 times smaller than pine or oak.
Ready the wood becomes very durable while retaining an unusual softness. The maximum density of balsa in a dry form — 150 kg/cubic meter, which is 4 times less than that of birch. Large porous structure resembles a sponge or honeycomb, tree rings do not exist.
Given the relatively low density, the wood is slightly inferior in strength to oak or pine.
